Video Analysis : Slipknot – Sulfur

The video shoot

This is a video clip from slipknot with their brand new death mask at that time to proof that their evolution with their music , this video is begin with a single breath from the vocalist with the mask I think it mean that this mask is alive the mask have a power , after the breath of the mask the song is begin with a very dark distortion this band  is starting to “head bang” which is shaking their head following the rhythm of their metal music, their wardrobe are the same, slipknot is always using the same clothes but with the different mask, and for a long time their identity was kept as a secret . in this video clip they used a mechanical suit with a single red line in their hand from neck to arm I think in this video the director was using 3 until 7 camera including the waterproof camera because some of the scene was taking under the water with a lot of bubble which is mean that this mask is breathing although they were not a human.

The location of this video clip was on the water –channel and the setting like a underground show and it was dominated with green, dark blue colors  which is means like the colors of the water in the water–channel. I think in this video clip slipknot want to say that in the underground  place, so far away from the surface or in the darkest place they still can make and show the best performance.

The angle of the camera was very fast (under  four second) and the director was play with the camera focus, we can see it at the minute 0:45,1:01,1:25, and 1:30 although it was only a second but it was very interesting  to see that movement, so the picture is more alive, besides that the movement of the camera like till up, till down, pan left and pan right were almost used by the director as a connector or transition from a scene to another scene with a very fast movement, we can see it at minute 0:48,0:59,1:01,1:07,1:38,2:02,and 3:37. In my opinion there are two main focus picture in this video, there are the Slipknot  performance in the water-channel and the scene when all the members of Slipknot was drowning in the water and they are breathing under the water, the bubble  is the evidence that they are breathing under the water. I think it is very interesting when the scenes of breathing underwater  are  used as the transition to another scene. in the editing process the editor make a very fast movement when the members of Slipknot are  drowning and suddenly is continue with  slow movement we can see it at minute 3:04,3:07, :3:09, 3:12, 3:14, 3:18, 3:24, 3:28, 3:45, 4:19, 4:23,and 4:45. The director always use the picture of water in a slow motion movement like in a minute 0:47, 0;50, and 1:14 as the transition and this video was ended with the scene when the vocalist was appeared into the water surface and drown again to the water with a slow movement and the sound of a breath like in the beginning .

This video is very energetic, Slipknot always have a good spirit not only on their live performance but also in this video clip, I think the lyric and the video clip was connected, lets checked it.

Sulfur lyrics
Songwriters: Crahan, Michael Shawn; Fehn, Chris; Gray, Paul D; Jones, Craig A; Jordison, Nathan J; Root, James Donald; Taylor, Corey; Thomson, Mickael;

My guilt and my shame
Always sell me short, always feel the same
And my face and my soul
Always wear me thin, always under control

But the longest hours you’ll have in your life
Are the ones you sit through to know if you’re right
So I’ll wait but I pray that I’m wrong
Because I think I know what’s going on

So let me get this straight
The only will is my own
I do whatever I want and stay alone
All my decisions make it untouchable and tainted

I’m gonna suffer for the rest of my life
But I will always find a way to survive
I’m not a failure but I know what it’s like
I can take it or leave it or die

Stay, you don’t always know where you stand
Till you know that you won’t run away
There’s something inside me that feels
Like breathing in sulfur

My life is undone
And I’m a sinner to most but a sage to some
And my Gods are untrue
I’m probably wrong but I’m better than you

And the longest hours I’ve had in my life
Were the ones I went through to know I was right
So I’m safe but I’m a little outside
I’m gonna laugh when I’m buried alive

Stay, you don’t always know where you stand
Till you know that you won’t run away
There’s something inside me that feels
Like breathing in sulfur, like breathing in sulfur

Like breathing in sulfur
Like breathing in sulfur

Stay, you don’t always know where you stand
Till you know that you won’t run away
There’s something inside me that feels
Like breathing in sulfur, like breathing in sulfur

Stay, you don’t always know where you stand
(You don’t always know where you stand)
Till you know that you won’t run away
There’s something inside me that feels
(There’s something inside me that feels)
Like breathing in sulfur, like breathing in sulfur

Like breathing in sulfur
Like breathing in sulfur
Like breathing in sulfur
Like breathing in sulfur

The Idea and the conclusion

I think this video clip was very related with the lyrics of the song, if we don’t have nothing in this live it’s just like breathing in sulfur, and the idea to make a performance in the in the water–channel was not a bad idea, the director P.R. Brown was have a good idea the camera trick was fantastic.
